I was at this show. It was really fantastic. I remember them messing up in the middle of “Eminence Front” but somehow that made it more of fun performance because these pros are very human. I seem to recall some funny comments from the stage made afterwards.

I appreciate these two albums so much more than I did 25 years ago.

Best sound on these remixed versions and the bonus tracks are a great addition 🙂

IT'S HARD's saving grace is the correction of all the mistakes they made when they mixed the album in such a hurry in 1982. The live songs from the '82 tour don't add much IMHO. The FACE DANCES remaster, on the other hand, includes the songs that should have made it onto the original 1981 release - "It's In You" and "I Like Nightmares."

There was a few Good Song's on this Album....a few crap as well and I'd say by Their own admission,,,Eminence Front in my opinion the best...But anthena was good and maybe underplayed at concerts

I wish there had been more new Who material all those years - we had to make due with solo albums and reunions.

I guess ink costs money

I was about 11 years old when this came out.... I was longing to hear "who are you"part 2.... I didn't take an immediate shine to FD but, it grew on me...." Cache, Cache" and " Steal My Money".... Now I feel very close to that album for completely different reasons than I do for *who are you".... It's exactly what it is... A band soldiering on after two devastating events..... Although I don't think the band could have continued if Keith Moon had not died,...

I think I'm one of the few people who actually likes this record.

I think to truly appreciate this album, and it took me awhile to get there, you have to recognize where Pete Townshend was as a person and a musician when he was writing and recording this album. You can't overlook that he was actively working to change the Who. He agreed to continue with the Who after Keith's death, but he did that by insisting on some key changes to how the Who approached being the Who: bringing in a drummer who was a friend of the band, dependable, had worked with them before, and who wasn't going to try to ape Keith Moon; changing the stage show with live keyboards and reducing the loudness, and creating songs that were designed and contrived to fit musical life in the 1980s. IMHO, one of the significant production mistakes the band made, and it appears it's because Roger didn't want it on the album, was to leave off "It's In You." That song reflects Pete's direction for his songwriting contributions to the Who going forward. "You say that power chords are all that we should play/Well, this is what you're gonna eat today, Virginia." Also, there's basically no guitar solo in this song! *THIS* is where Pete Townshend was in 1980/81. It's Pete's way of saying, "If I'm gonna be in this band, then this is how we're going to sound on record." And this is the song that should have led off the album! Once you get this song, the rest of Pete on FD makes sense, sense that it didn't make in 1981. The guy who reviewed the album for ROLLING STONE said it best in the title of his review "Who are these guys?" The inclusion of "It's In You" is the starting point for "who these guys are." Even if John didn't like it and Kenney didn't like it. [And then, sorry for the rabbit hole, you get to the writing for IT'S HARD where Pete steps out of character and asks his band mates, "What do you want me to write about?"]

A far better album than often been given credit for. Their best with Kenney Jones

one of my favorite- and 'possibly' most played Who records. not a bad song on it.

I still really liked the Who during this period & they were very good Live with Rabbit on keyboards. Face Dances & It's Hard were fine albums I also enjoyed Who's Last & the VHS the Who Rocks America. Not as brilliant as the Tommy, Live at Leeds, Who's next, MBBAB, Quadrophenia period but still Great.

In 1981 I was 12 years old, the year before in 1980 or the year before that in 1979 my brother took me to see the movie, the kids are all right. So I was 10 or 11 when I saw that movie. I had no idea who, the who, were before I saw that movie. so sing that movie clearly changed the direction of my life. As an 11-year-old and 12-year-old I was busy doing things that a kid that age does and so was not very literate on The WWho and at the time this album came out had no idea Keith Moon had passed away. my mom bought me this record for my birthday, so when I looked at the album cover and saw Kenny Jones I thought, my God, Keith Moon looks really really bad. Fortunately my brother filled me in on what had happened to Keith. So as a result, listening to this record I was somewhat confused but I felt the songs were really good and left a mark on me emotionally. The record I listened to mostly during this time. Before I got this record for my birthday, was the 8 track version of the kids are all right soundtrack.

I love this album. 'You Better, You Bet' was one of the songs that made up the soundtrack of my youth.

Great album and another tricky day for you🫡

Saw the tour , bought the LP ! Lots of great songs.

It's an outstanding album..

Great 1st album without Keith

This album means a lot to me because it is the first 'new' WHO I bought since becoming a rabid fan following "The Kids Are Alright" doc. I'd always liked them- had Tommy, Leeds, and Who's Next- before I saw the doc, but that put me in overdrive! I couldn't wait to hear new music with the new lineup. So OK: I was a little disappointed with the lack of real guitar raunch, but "New Song" from Who Are You informed me that they (Pete) couldn't keep doing the same thing. I decided that I loved Face Dances after a couple listens. In 1981, at 16, I really had no idea of what Pete was writing about most of the time! But as I grew older the lyrics began to make sense and I could relate. The production is clear, Roger's vocals fit every song perfectly, and Pete's playing showed change and progression. So I guess I am another in the minority who like this album Very Much!

I like this album, You better you bet is a great song!!

great songwriting by both Pete AND John.

This album has aged well! it’s on par with predecessor: who are you?

Love this album!

By their standards not a very good album, it was obvious at this point that Pete had saved his best songs for his solo albums.

Well after the loss of Moonie I was apprehensive about this album but I loved it

A few good songs and a lot of filler

I have this album signed by John Entwistle & Roger Daltrey!

Great album!!

Great record!

I enjoyed this record been into the who since mid 60s,just another phase I think...

The two Entwistle tracks save this album (in my opinion of course)

Single (and Magazines) of the day

On May 20, 1967 "Pictures of Lily" hit its U.K. chart peak at #4. It was also the discussed in both the New Musical Express and Disc and Music Echo. Not to be left out, Melody Maker talks to Keith while Billboard magazine talks about Happy Jack

First up: "Lily isn't pornographic, say Who" was the headline in New Musical Express. Pete defends The Who's new single "Pictures of Lily."

Read the article here: brandy_and.tripod.com/oo/lilyoo.html

Next: "Pictures of Lily" was a hot topic in Disc and Music Echo with Ray Davies stepping up to defend the song from being dirty. "I'm sure Pete Townshend would be most upset if he was told 'Pictures of Lily' was a dirty song."

Roger was a little more coy in an interview in the same issue: "I suppose the words are a bit dodgy. Perhaps we just see how close to the wind we can sail -- without actually getting banned." Also Lulu voiced her opinion on the song.

Next: Melody Maker talked to Keith in an article titled "The economy size, family pack Who --for U.S. consumption"

Lastly: Billboard magazine reported that TRO is issuing "Happy Jack" sheet music in a special edition

Concert of the day

On May 20, 1966 The Who played the Corn Exchange in Newbury, Berkshire.

John and Keith were late due to attending Ready Steady Go! Pete and Roger played with the bassist and drummer from their opening act The Jimmy Brown Sound and are naturally furious at Keith.

At the end of the show Keith, knocking over his drum set as usual, hits Pete in the leg with a falling cymbal. Pete turns and sends his guitar flying right into Keiths head. Keith and John storm off determined that they are finally finished with The Who. They head over to Kit Lamberts house to tell him theyre out.

Great song. But I think his New Wave hair cut is not cool.

One of my fav solo tunes.
