I have to admit to being very disappointed with the film.

The original vision of the film being a feast for the hard core fan has been passed over for a diluted re-hash of the familiar Who story. Whilst the inclusion of the rare or previously unseen footage is extremely welcome and the new interviews with Pete and Roger give us a great insight into where they are at now in terms of their relationship with each other and The Who, we get very little in the way of any insight.

My fiancee thought it was a superb film and loved the whole thing, however, it said it all to me in that the film is directed at people who have a limited or no knowledge of the band.

Disappointing but it has it's good points.

Have to disagree with Kempo, though I see where your view is coming from.

I got the movie for Christmas and I LOVED IT!! Of course...after watching the Kids Are Alright 8 billion times, I needed a change of pace when it came to a Who movie. I was happy, as said, about previously either unreleased or rare footage and I though, overall, the movie was very well put together. Of course, interviews with Pete, Roger, and John made it better too. :]

My opinion? Get it. Or borrow it from someone. I thought it was very funny, but also quite sad. You know, to see them grow up and to hear people talk about Keith and John's deaths. -tear- But it was rather good, I say.

Fool On The Hill,

AJ is an extremely simple biography of the band. It simply doesn't hold a flame to TKAA on any level whatsoever. The original press release for AJ indicated that it was to be a companion film to TKAA rather than an attempt to usurp it. Why, then they felt the need to include ANY of the material that had featured in TKAA is beyond me - they even used the clip from TKAA to highlight the smash up at Peoria Opera House '68 that is in fact the climax to the band's Woodstock show. Why not use something else?

I'd assume that you fall into the samecatogory of Who fan that my fiancee falls into; early to mid 20's and a relatively new convert. The orignal synopsis of the film clearly had this pointed towards those of us more steeped in Who history - given the pleas for rare material from the archives of collectors, it would have been safe to assume that this film would have bee the treasure trove of live material - on film - that we had all been waiting for for so long. Where were the '73 Quadrophenia rehearsals shot by Chris Morphet and Richard Stanley? Where is all the film that Tom Wright shot in '67 / '68? The Shepperton rehearsals of various covers? The list goes on. A descision was made byt he "new" production team to dilute all of this and target the film at a mass audience - a film that anyone could watch and then say that they know about The Who - all very laudible and a wonderful way of reaching out to a large audience, but for the "20-to-lifers" amongst us, simply not good enough and I'll probably never watch it again.

The above isn;t necessarily clear. If you listen to the audio track of the smash, they have used the Woodstock climax..........dubbed over whatever the actual soundtrack from Peoria is / was.

Well...you got it right. I'm actually not even as old as you thought probably. But that's alright. People have told me I'm not a "real" fan before, saying that I wasn't born in the time, but I don't mind. Maybe the movie was just a promotional project and wasn't really a great synopsis of the Who's work, but I still found it entertaining, though I do find most everything entertaining. :]

Also, you were asking where all the various outtakes and sessions were and why they were not included. I think you're right in saying they made a movie to reach out to a large audience, I think it was a good idea on their part. That would definitely give them more money in the long run, eh?

So I'm saying, yes, we're going to have different views on it, because you've known the Who longer and better than I have, and I just get joy listening to their music. I don't have to be a professional on them, though I have learned a lot about them in the few years I've liked them. Hm....maybe some day they will release all of their film clips, some they've never released before. Or...maybe Pete and Roger will work on another film and the next will be better. Though I just thought right now, no doubt the Movie "See Me Feel Me: Keith Moon Naked for your Pleasure" is going to be the same way, if not worse. I have a bad feeling about that film...I don't know why.

But I must say, I do respect the fact that you're a bigger fan, as it were, and I won't bother you more on the subject. I just thought that maybe a lot of people on the site were like me and would get the pleasure of seeing the movie. That was all I was throwing out there.

~Fool

Hey Fool,

Listen, there's no such thing as a better fan or a "real" fan. Some people have this sad notion that because they were lucky enough to see the band with Keith (or with John), they are true and proper Who fans. Absolute rubbish and, were that the case, Pete and Roger woudl simply not have kept the band going.

You have as much right to comment as anyone else and you are a true fan if the music moves you.

I guess the difference between you and I is that I've been a bit burnt with my associations with some of the people surrounding the band in the past
and am a bit jaded. Don't let that get in the way though - gotta keep reminding myself of that one!

In Roger's words "We're ALL in The Who".

Yesh.....I do think that people should stop telling the "less experienced" Who fans that they're not "real" fans. I didn't mean to make it sound like you were that sort of person. I'm sorry. I have yo admit though, and so do you, you probably are a lot..hmm....better aquainted with them considering you have been alive longer than I have and no doubt were interested in them longer than I have been. xD Sometimes I wish I was born in a completely different decade.

So...what do you think about the New movie that's supposed to come out next year? The Keith Moon one....I was disappointed to find out Mike Myers will be playing him, but I still hope it'll be good.

Personally, I don't think it'll ever get made and as far as I'm concerned, that's absolutely fine with me.

As far as I'm concerned, it's virtually impossible to make a film about a character as complex as someone like Keith. Look at the Tina Turner film, the Michael Jackson one and the shambolic piece of tat that was made about The Beach Boys - none of them did anything at all to either educate the viewer or simply entertain. They were heaped full of bias which just proved that they were made simply to be able to make a buck or two.

It's laudable that Roger wants to retain such close control over anything to do with this. BUT, the fact that he's finding it so hard to get someone to deliver a script speaks volumes about just how hard it is going to be to get anything running that does Keith's memory justice.

As for Meyers, I've never seen him do any acting that has made me think that he is a great actor. He's a funny guy and perfect for the Austin Powers role, but I don't think he could ever make me believe that he's Keith.

Hopefully it won't get made and we can simply remember Keith exactly the way we want to as one of the best drummers in the world and the best drummer The Who ever had.

I fully agree with that. I can't see Myers doing Keith any justice... no actor, for that matter, but I;m sure there are some that could come a lot closer. Not sure if I really want that film to be made.

As for Amazing Journey... I haven't seen it yet, and I don;t know yet if I'll get it. Reading reviews and posts by other fans on different message boards makes me think I'll just be disappointed anyway... and the bits I;ve seen look like a TKAA ripoff, as you said.

I will have to say that both Amazing Journey and The Kids Are Alright stand alone on their own merits. I happened upon the former after a rather excited telephone message from a fellow retired Navy Airedale told me it was going to be broadcast on VH1.

Frankly, I was more impressed by a video where Pete, Roger and John talked at length about the LIFEHOUSE project (in general) and WHO'S NEXT (in particular). That provided for me a tremendous amount of insight and information in regard to a project I had been wanting to learn more about.

I will say this about The Kids Are Alright- the soundtrack. I find the overdubbing done on "See Me, Feel Me" to be quite unnecessary, as Roger's voice had never sounded so ballsy as it did that night in New York. But I guess John wanted a different feel of it, so the vocals were overdubbed in the CD reissue- I do not recall the original being tampered with on the album release.

You have this wrong. There is no overdubbing on "See Me Feel Me" on the TKAA soundtrack. The Woodstock perfprmances are there as played. I think you're talking about the overdubs done on the Live At Leeds deluxe Edition; and, yes, they are appalling. And not only on "See Me Feel Me" either......... Had nothing to do with John either - HIS overdubbed vocal at the start of "Heaven & Hell" was done c1994 when the tapes were overhauled for the first re-issue following 30 Years.
