Tabbed by Colin

2012-06-14

The Who did two versions of this song (at least I'm only aware of two): one from
the 2002 My Generation Deluxe Edition and the reissue of Odds & Sods. I tabbed
this from the Deluxe Edition version. This is The Who's version, recorded in
April 1965, while they were recording the My Generation album. The High Numbers
version is the one that I believe is on Odds & Sods was recorded sometime in
early 1964, before they recorded "I Can't Explain", I think. I'm not too sure
(nor am I ever sure) on the background of the recordings, but I am sure of this
bass tab. It's roughly 90% accurate. Here goes:

It starts off with Pete's guitar, then the bass kicks into the chorus (play the
chorus twice and throw in some fills)
G|-------|---------------------------------------------------|
D|-------|-----4--4-4-4-----4--4-4-4-----4--4-4-4------------|
A|-4-2---|-4-4----------4-4----------4-4----------4--4--4--4-|
E|-----4-|---------------------------------------------------|

The verses are simple. You just play this for the first three lines
G|------------|
D|---2-4--4---|
A|-4--------4-|
E|------------|

Then use this for the last line in every verse and kick back into the chorus
G|--------------|
D|---2-4--------|
A|-4------4-2---|
E|------------4-|

Here's the chorus for the rest of the song
G|---------------------------------------------------|
D|-----4--4-4-4-----4--4-4-4-----4--4-4-4------------|
A|-4-4----------4-4----------4-4----------4--4--4--4-|
E|---------------------------------------------------|

G|----------------------------------------------------|
D|-----4--4-4-4-----4--4-4-4-----4--4-4-4-------------|
A|-4-4----------4-4----------4-4----------4-4-2---2h4-|
E|----------------------------------------------4-----|

Then there's another verse

Then another chorus

Pete plays a solo after the chorus. Treat the solo as another verse, so play the
bass for the verses

There's another chorus after the solo

Then a final verse (this time with a call-and-response vocal technique)

Then a final chorus

Then play this five times:
G|-----------|
D|-----------|
A|-4-2---2h4-|
E|-----2-----|

Here's the big finale:
G|---------66666666-|
D|---2-4------------|
A|-4-----4----------|
E|------------------|

I hope I got this bass tab perfect this time. It's one of my favorite Who tracks
(even though it's a Holland-Dozier-Holland song, not a Townshend song). They have
so much energy in this song, especially Moonie. Listen to the drums on the Deluxe
Edition version. Roger's vocals are excellent, for being one of the first tracks
they recorded under the name The Who. Fantastic. I hope you'll get a ton of use
with this bass tab.

Long live rock!
