The rhythm is pretty much in 4, although there are some strange parts which you'll need to get by listening to the recording. Pete plays it pretty straight, keeping it simple, as befits the song, just him and his acoustic. I've heard a lot of versions of "Begin" and I think his is the best--it captures the plaintive longing of the song in a way none of the others did. (Some were actually upbeat, which leads me to wonder if the artist or producer actually understood the lyrics-- kind of like some recordings of Heartbreak Hotel.) Chords (loads of them, but none are particularly hard :): Cmaj7: x3545x Cmaj13: x35455 (alternate with this in Cmaj7--see TAB below) G7: 3x343x F: 133211 Dmin7(1): x5x565 G7sus4: 3x353x Cmin7: x3x343 F7: 131233 Bb: x1333x Bbmaj7: x1323x Bb7: x1313x Bbmin7: x1312x Eb7: x6868x Abmaj7: 4x554x Ab6: 4x354x Ao7: x0454x (or 5x454x) Ab: 466544 G: 355433 Fmin(1): 133111 C7: x3535x Fmin(2): xx3111 D07(1): xx0111 Emin7: x7x787 Amin9: 5x5557 Amin7: 5x5555 D07(2): x5656x Dmin7(2): xx0211 Dmin7/C: x30211 Fmin/C: x3x111 Verse 1: Cmaj7 When they begin the beguine, Cmaj7 G7 It brings back the sounds of music so tender F Dmin7(1) It brings back a night of tropical splendor G7 G7sus4 G7 Cmaj7 When they begin the beguine Verse 2 (as before): I'm with you once more under the stars Down by the shore an orchestra's playing And even the palms seem to be swaying When they begin the beguine Bridge: Cmin7 F7 Bb Bbmaj7 Bb7 To live it again is past all endeavor Bbmin7 Eb7 Abmaj7 Ab6 Except when that tune clutches my heart Ao7 (rapid strum) And there we are, swearing to love forever G Ab Fmin(1) G7 G7sus4 G7 And promising never, never to part Verse 3: Cmaj7 Cmaj13 What moments divine, what rapture serene C7 G7 'Til clouds came along to disperse the joys we had tasted Fmin(2) D07(1) Fmin(2) And now when I hear people curse the chance that was wasted G7 G7sus4 G7 Cmaj7 I know but too well what they mean Verse 4: Cmaj7 So don't let them begine the beguine Cmaj7 G7 Let the love that was once a fire remain an ember F Dmin7(1) Emin7 Amin9 Amin7 Let it sleep like the dead desire I only remember G7 G7sus4 G7 Cmaj7 When they begin the beguine Verse 5: Cmaj7 Cmaj13 Oh yes let them begine the beguine, make them play Cmaj7 G7 'Til the stars that were there before return above you F Dmin7(1) Emin7 Amin9 Amin7 'Til you whisper once more "Darling I love you" Dmin7(1) D07(2) And they suddenly know what heaven we're in G7 Dmin7(2) Dmin7/C Fmin/C When they begin G7 Cmaj7 The beguine He attempts to carry the bass figure of the song as much as he can throughout.
